Natalie Portman reveals how they made her look 10 inches taller in Thor: Love and Thunder for her new role as the 6ft-tall Mighty Thor. Following 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is set to appear once more in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is set to introduce a brand new villain into the MCU, Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, and bring back Portman’s Jane Foster, albeit a more muscled version of the character that has taken up the mantle of the Mighty Thor.
First introduced in 2011’s Thor as one of the world’s leading astrophysicists and the love interest to Hemsworth’s character, Jane would ultimately return in the film’s sequel, Thor: The Dark World, and also feature in a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame. Initial trailers for Thor: Love and Thunder tease that Portman’s role is set to be much bigger this time around, showing Jane wielding the reforged Mjölnir and sporting her very own armor. Trailers also suggest that Jane, as well as Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and the Guardians of the Galaxy, will play a pivotal role in Thor’s eventual fight against the formidable Gorr.
In a new interview with Variety, Portman explains that in order to depict her as the 6ft-tall Mighty Thor, the production actually used a fairly simple behind-the-scenes method. After rehearsing the scene to figure out exactly where she’d be walking, the crew built a 10-inch-tall deck that she would walk along during the filming of the actual shot. While invisible on camera, the simple technique makes Portman the appropriate height when alongside taller costars like Hemsworth. Check out Portman’s comment below:
We’d rehearse the scene, they’d see the path, and then they’d build a path that was like one foot off the ground or whatever, and I would just walk on that.
While fans are still somewhat in the dark in terms of the version of Jane’s Mighty Thor that will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, there has clearly been an effort to wow audiences with the character’s new physicality. With Hemsworth’s Thor seemingly undergoing something of a mid-life crisis in the new film and struggling with whether he wants to be a superhero anymore, Jane’s new form has the potential to exacerbate this inner conflict and make him feel even more inadequate. It remains to be seen, however, just how closely Jane’s new role in Thor: Love and Thunder will stick to the comics.
After being depicted mostly as a damsel in distress in both Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Jane has the opportunity to finally become a superhero in her own right in Thor: Love and Thunder. The character will no longer rely on another hero to save or protect her, a change that will allow for an entirely new dynamic between Jane and Thor. While many details about the role of Portman’s Mighty Thor in the story remain unknown, audiences don’t have much longer to wait to find out, with Thor: Love and Thunder scheduled to release in theaters on July 8.
